Zamość: Our Polish Twin

[Note: The sc of Zamosc are accented and sound like shch; you will need the Pan European alphabet to display them.]

Zamość is one of the finest towns in Poland. Its renaissance square famous throughout the country. Fortunately it also has equally exceptional inhabitants who welcome visitors from their twin town, Loughborough.
There is a business college which has a memorandum of agreement with Loughborough University.

Our new partnership with Zamość has opened a new and envigourating relationship for Loughborough. Already several groups have visited and several individuals and school groups have come to our town. In many ways Zamość is a break with the traditional pattern of twinning because of the distance and because of our histories. From the begining the twinning has been supported by our own Polish community, led by Wiktor Maslowski, but Zamość has welcomed us magnificently too. The common language tends to be English, though a little Polish goes a long way and it's not impossible to learn a few useful phrases.

The twinning relationship is still young but we have already made contacts between local schools and scouts. In February 2001 a marvellous play called I see their shadows everywhere..." about the Holocaust came to Loughborough Schools with the 3LO school. In May 2001 we hope to arrange a visit from Loughborough. You can read the account written by the Scout Trip Leader from their trip to Zamosc last year. You cannot visit Poland without being capitivated by so many new and wonderful things... get a taste of Poland aboard a bicycle!
